Divorce trends rise following winter holidays, study suggests

If the stress of the upcoming holiday season already has you seeing the cracks and strains in your marriage, you're not alone. The "go here, do that" hectic shuffle of the holidays tends to have this effect on a large number of people. So much so that sociologists are starting to notice a trend in divorce filings just following the winter holidays.

According to research conducted by sociologists at the University of Washington, the number of people who file for divorce spikes during two points in any given year: just after the summer months and just after the New Year - right around March to be exact. But why the strange biannual trend and does that mean now is a good time to start planning for your divorce?

While stress from the holiday season can be an extenuating factor for divorce, some people see the approach of January 1st as the perfect point to get a fresh start. Because divorce negotiations can take some time to work their way through the courts, it's not surprising that we don't start seeing the wave of divorce filings until March, as research shows.

In addition to this, January is the start of the new tax year as well. Because divorce can have a profound effect on your taxes, it makes sense that couples having trouble with their marriage would want to wait until after the holidays to start the process of dissolving their marriage.

If dealing with the stress of family, the holiday rush and a divorce petition all at the same time isn't your cup of tea, then filing for divorce after the winter months is probably best for your situation. But if you want to get a head start on the process - or avoid getting wrapped up in the seasonal divorce trend - then now may be the best time to start planning with a lawyer for your divorce.
